On 11 March 2025, the representative Ro Khanna held a short but great discussion at the Bitcoin for America Summit of the Bitcoin Policy Institute.
“Bitcoin is transformative for so many people all over the world,” said representative Khanna at the top. “That’s why the Democratic Party should embrace it as something that can create financial empowerment for people not only in the United States, but all over the world.”
This is the type of message that has been spreading for years now and has urged his democratic companions to follow his advantage. It has implored them that they are not afraid of Bitcoin, but to see it just as they see other main technological progress of our time, including the internet itself.
“My goal is to make Bitcoin Bipartisan,” said the representative to Bitcoin Magazine. “I want to convince the Democrats that Bitcoin is a next generation shop that millions of people around the world use and that America shows leadership allows us to connect with these people, often some of the most desired.”
For a party that often supports financial inclusion, it seems almost ironic that so many Democrats have looked beyond Bitcoin, an open source technology that anyone can use with nothing but an internet connection (and, in some cases, even without one).
Having said that, the representative Khanna stressed that, while it remains one of the few most democratic vocal when it comes to being pro-Bitcoin, the number of democratic politicians who have declared that they are in favor of technology has increased substantially in recent years.
“We went from only 10 of us to support Bitcoin and Crypto at almost 70 or 80,” said the representative Khanna. “It is happening slowly.”
And while some have attributed to the historical position of most of the democrats on Bitcoin, the representative Khanna states that the question is more lack of understanding the purpose and cases of use of technology.
“Some democratic politicians are not aware of how useful Bitcoin is with remittances or how it can be used by those who do not have access to US dollars,” said the deputy. “Many people all over the world use it for both reasons,” he added, alluding to the idea that many, including some democrats, may not be aware of this fact.
The block of Bitcoin and Crypto votes in the United States
According to the research of Coinbase, in each of the swing states in the most recent US presidential elections, there was about 10 times the number of cryptocurrency holders compared to the vote differential between Biden and Trump in 2020.
Harris lost against Trump in each of these Swing states, leaving some to hypothesize that the turnout at the Bitcoin and Crypto Voting Bloc polls could have been one of the main forces that influenced the elections in favor of Trump.
While the Khanna representative does not know how far this voting block influenced the electoral results, he agreed that it was probably one of the many main factors that influenced the result of the elections.
“I think he made the difference,” said the deputy. “In so close elections, everything matters and the fact that there were some democrats who offended Bitcoin and cryptocurrency voters was not useful.”
And the representative Khanna is not just to recognize this.
In December 2024, al New York Times Dealbook Summit, Van Jones-Political analyzed, media person and prominent voice within the Democratic Party-they declared that he was to the detriment of the Democratic Party who closed the pro-Bitcoin and Pro-Cripto voters.
The representative Khanna Sang Jones Loda and said we should hear more voices like Jones “within the Democratic Party speaking in favor of Bitcoin in the near future.
“I have a lot of respect for Van Jones,” said the representative Khanna.
“He spent some time in the Bay Area, so he gets technology. The party will move in a direction that will embrace Bitcoin and other technologies,” he added.
Will Bitcoin’s embrace of President Trump dissuade the Democrats from supporting him?
While it only seems logical that the Democratic Party would reverse its position on Bitcoin if he is trying to collect seats in the Chamber and the Senate arrives the medium -term elections of 2026, he seemed simultaneously difficult to imagine more democratic who come out in support of Bitcoin, given the highly partisan political climate in the United States coupled coupled to the fact that President Trump is a Bitcoin Ardent.
The Khanna representative claimed that the Democrats should not think along the party lines when it comes to Bitcoin, but rather to evaluate the technology based exclusively on what it is.
“Politicians are able to evaluate Bitcoin in his merits,” said the representative Khanna.
“Bitcoin is only a decentralized digital currency that allows peer-to-peer transactions without the need for an intermediary. People only need to study bitcoin and learn that it is only a means of exchange,” he added.
The Khanna representative also used a moment to differentiate the Bitcoin and Meme coins, highlighting the fact that the recently published coin ($ Trump) of the President creates a lot of confusion as regards the proposal for the value of the crypto resources, including Bitcoin.
“We shouldn’t have elected officials such as President Trump by launching meme coins,” said the deputy.
Obtain the democrats on the right side of the story
At a time when many US citizens are struggling to make ends meet, should Bitcoin be a matter of front and center for the Democrats, once widely considered as the political party of the middle and working class?
The representative Khanna does not necessarily think so, but does not even think that the party should continue the technology of Pooh-Pooh.
“There are much bigger problems at this moment like cuts in Medicaid, the fire of veterans and the irregular policy of rates,” explained the deputy.
“But the Democrats were on the wrong side of the issues of innovation and Bitcoin in 2022 and 2024, and now we have the opportunity to put ourselves on the right side,” he added.
So, in what way can pro-bitcoin democratic voters help to get their party from the right side of history when it comes to Bitcoin?
Rep. Khanna had some suggestions:
“They should indicate those of us who are guiding on Bitcoin and Crypto,” he said.
“Government members can encourage studying the problem so that they are not uninformed,” he added.
“And they should talk about the huge adoption of Bitcoin.”
