Feel good Friday He’s back, you mentally ill people! And already there is a new “Chinese virus” going around.

Oh dear. Here we go again. As the calendar turns to the new year, reports of a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China are raising questions about the virus and its possible fallout.

Someone has already made a coin entitled for the occasion COVID 2025 ($COVID25) on meme coin platform Pump.fun, and it’s going down the drain. OH, wait, no. The carpet has been removed. Chads Wagmi block!

There’s no official word yet on whether HMPV is behind the rising wave of flu-like illnesses in China, but data from the China CDC paints a worrying picture as the new year approaches. The numbers are rising, raising questions about what HMPV is and what it might mean in the coming months.

China’s CDC reports that influenza still leads to other respiratory illnesses, claiming 30.2% of late-2024 test results. But HMPV, which garners 6.2% of positive tests and 5.4% of hospital admissions, is approaching better-known territory, surpassing COVID-19.
