Legacy Product Update

Since launching the first DAO framework in 2017, Aragon has been at the forefront of developing onchain governance. Our journey over the past seven years has provided valuable insights, leading to the development of our next-generation technology stack: Aragon OSx and Aragon App.

Standardizing our product portfolio is essential to maintaining our focus and momentum. By focusing our efforts on the most impactful governance technology – Aragon’s DAO framework – we can continue to innovate in onchain governance and drive adoption. That’s why we’re making some changes to support our older products.

We are discontinuing front-end support for Aragon Court, Govern, and Voice on December 1, 2024.

Users with ANT activated Aragon court They can withdraw their ANT, and users with ANJ can activate them in First copy of the Court of Aragon ANJ can be withdrawn Convert it to ANT. All token holders can Exchange ANT for ETH Until November 2, 2024 in the ANT Recovery Initiative of the Aragon Society. The facades of the Aragon Court will not be neglected until the end of the restoration initiative.

Why we sunset these products

In 2021, Aragon provided the Aragon court, governor, and voice. This pipeline aims to address high gas costs and voter apathy through a more efficient but controversial governance process:

  • Aragon Voice: Acting as a legislative authority, token holders can propose and sign off-chain votes for free.
  • State of Aragon: Acts as an executive authority, responsible for activating the will of society through onchain transactions.
  • Aragon court: Act as a judicial authority, resolving disputes that arose when Govern’s transactions contradicted Voice signals.

While these products introduced new concepts and captured vertical space, they were too prescriptive and complex to be widely adopted compared to the success of the aragonOS protocol and the Aragon Client application. After doubling our efforts in developing the aragonOS line, Aragon’s leading DAO framework, and receiving positive market feedback in this direction, it is time to shift our focus fully to modular solutions that provide the flexibility needed in an increasingly complex onchain landscape.

The Aragon Client will be supported until active DAOs are safely migrated to the new Aragon stack.

Aragon Client is the user interface for aragonOS, the industry’s first DAO framework. Thousands of DAOs, including industry leaders like Lido, Curve, and Decentraland, have been built on this framework. However, adapting and developing these DAOs has been difficult due to the rigidity of the original frameworks and lack of updates.

We’ve addressed some of the biggest vulnerabilities and redesigned Aragon’s DAO framework with Aragon OSx from the ground up, making it easier for DAOs to design their own custom governance and evolve gracefully over time. We are committed to supporting aragonOS and Aragon Client users throughout this transition period. Our team is ready to assist with migration solutions, ensuring a smooth and safe transition to the new group.

If your DAO relies on the Aragon Client front-end, contact us to explore migration solutions. We leave no one behind.

Our team continues to focus on Aragon’s next-generation DAO framework: Aragon OSx. Just over a year later, thousands of new DAOs have been released on it, including the Polygon Governance Hub, several custodian DAOs for the Morpho vault, and a few other exciting custom development projects that have yet to be announced!

The module-focused roadmap will start by focusing on:

  • Regulating the governance of multiple bodies: One-size-fits-all solutions do not suit onchain governance. Different organizations have different groups of stakeholders with different needs and will not succeed with a homogeneous technology stack. For example, rather than a complex jurisdiction-based dispute resolution system as we did with the court, we are developing modular building blocks across the group that offer multiple stages with their own governing bodies. This will allow projects to create custom governance models out of the box that suit their needs, including but not limited to optimistic governance.
  • Optimistic governanceOptimistic governance remains an ideal solution to allow teams to act quickly, overcome voter apathy, yet still provide the checks and balances afforded by more participatory forms of governance. Our phased governance model allows any governance process to become optimistic, allowing the DAO to identify any group of stakeholders, such as token holders, as objectors to a proposal.
  • Seamless on-chain voting: We believe that free and seamless on-chain voting is at stake. By leveraging censorship-resistant messaging bridges and proofs of storage, we are making seamless on-chain voting a reality where DAO members can vote any token, on any chain, for free, using a seamless user interface.

Aragon’s greatest contribution is its DAO framework, one of the two leading onchain governance frameworks in the industry. By continuing to evolve them into increasingly flexible and modular prototypes, we unlock solutions to persistent governance challenges, paving the way for the next generation of onchain governance.

  • Old users: If you are using any legacy Aragon products, including aragonOS and Aragon Client, please contact us to explore a migration solution. We offer discounted migration solutions for Aragon Client DAOs.
  • ANT and ANJ holders: If you are an Aragon Court user, we urge you to withdraw your ANJ tokens as soon as possible and convert them to ANT. ANT holders must exchange it for ETH. You have until November 2, 2024. The front end will be supported for users to withdraw ANT or ANJ from Aragon Court until the redemption period. If you have any questions, please contact: ant@aragon.org.
