Explore the growth and diversity of the open source ecosystem over seven years, with a focus on security, AI adoption, and increasing diversity, based on a comprehensive survey.
The open source ecosystem has undergone major transformations over the past seven years, with recent survey data highlighting key trends in security, AI adoption, and diversity. According to a GitHub blog, the latest survey surveyed 8,400 contributors, providing a comprehensive look at the current state and future trends of open source.
Security takes center stage
Security has emerged as a critical area of focus within the open source community. The 2024 survey asked questions about “Secure by Design” principles to assess how developers prioritize security in open source projects. 82% of respondents cited the importance of secure practices when adopting open source software, while 62% prioritized security when deciding where to contribute.
Artificial intelligence tools are gaining popularity
The use of AI tools is increasing in the open source community, with 72% of survey respondents reporting using AI tools like GitHub Copilot for coding and documentation purposes. This trend confirms the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence to enhance productivity and innovation in software development.
Embrace diversity
Diversity within the open source community has seen a positive increase, with a wider range of viewpoints and backgrounds enriching the ecosystem. The proportion of participants who identified as ethnic minorities increased from 13% in 2017 to 18% in 2024, and the proportion of those who identified as immigrants rose from 27% to 31%. This diversification reflects a more inclusive community, promoting diverse contributions and ideas.
The survey also highlights other important trends, including community attitudes toward privacy, harassment, finance, and overall societal health. These insights provide valuable guidance for stakeholders looking to support and invest in the future of open source.
Collaborative efforts for a secure future
To address ongoing security challenges, GitHub has committed $1.25 million through the Secure Open Source Fund, to support maintainers in strengthening security measures. The organization calls on other entities, including governments and funders, to collaborate and invest in open source initiatives.
With over 75 million new GitHub users since the last survey, the open source community is more robust and diverse than ever. These developments point to a promising path for open source, characterized by increased security, innovative AI applications, and a commitment to diversity.
