The 1st Annual African Blockchain Championship Launches April 12th

Nairobi, Kenya, April 112025 / Alexablockchain / – Directed Development launches the first, hybrid virtual and in-person blockchain development competition with over $ 30,000 in prizes, provided by eight international blockchains and AI companies. The inaugural championship has more than 15 areas across the continent, including local partners in Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa and Rwanda. The purpose of the African blockchain championship is to ignite the next generation of blockchain-powered solutions.

“The African blockchain championship is based on realizing that the blockchain is most useful in low-trusting environments. In environments where middlemen are not trusted because they take advantage of their position of power, this is the case in many places around the world, but in particular Africa. Sällström, African blockchain championship lead organizer

Pioneering African blockchain event

The African Blockchain Championship is a PAN-African competition that brings together and trains developers to use blockchain technology to solve real-world problems. The Inaugural event cooperates with a division of the United Nations Development Program, UNDP ALTFINLABto contribute challenges and use cases to meet contests during the event. Competing teams will have the choice of remote or onsite attendance at co-found partner facilities at the leading technical universities.

Unlike most conventional hackathons, participants will have more than a month to find out and develop complex blockchain projects, whose desired outcome is many viable African startups ready to measure. Teams with the best solutions will get an opportunity to join the second cohort of the SDG blockchain accelerator, implemented by the UNDP Altfinlab in September 2025.

Why Africa and why now?

African cryptocurrency adoption is rising, with a recorded $ 125 billion in cryptocurrency transactions between July 2023 and June 2024. In 2023, Nigeria ranked the number of two in the Global Crypto Adoption Index. The influence on African culture is undeniable in the film industry by Nollywood, as well as the music industry, along with Afrobeats and Amapians who take music charts worldwide.
